SABA Family Law Clinic
Team up with SABA and Lone Star Legal Aid! We’re looking for 20-30 volunteers who will work alongside legal aid with 1-2 clients, individually or in pairs. Volunteers will receive family law training including a nuts & bolts walkthrough of how to prepare documents for a simple divorce case. Volunteers will work with clients to draft their divorce paperwork. Lunch will be provided.

Join SABA Houston and the the Houston Trial Lawyers' Association for a special panel discussion about gender-based and domestic violence awareness and key resources for survivors in the South Asian community. Featuring Swati Narayan of Daya Houston, Kusum Warsi of the Harris County District Attorneys' Office, and Nisha Pahuja, director of To Kill a Tiger. The panel will be moderated by former US Attorney and current Bracewell partner Alamdar Hamdani. The discussion will be followed by a screening of the Academy-Award nominated film To Kill a Tiger. To Kill a Tiger is a Hindi-language documentary about an Indian family who campaign for justice after their teenage daughter is raped. Venue, dinner, and drinks generously provided by AZA.

Join SABA, the Muslim Bar Association of Houston, and Judges Shannon Baldwin, Rabeea Sultan Collier, and Gloria E. Lopez for a discussion to foster inclusivity and cultural competence during Ramadan. We will discuss practical guidance for lawyers and judges on navigating trial schedules, accommodating observant jurors, witnesses, and court personnel and ensuring courtroom procedures that respect religious practices. The discussion will also include bias and prejudice and its impact on voir dire and arguments of counsel (to bench and jury), along with the judiciary’s role in voir dire. We will also explore the ethical importance of cultural awareness and its role in equitable advocacy and representation, with a focus on dispelling common myths and misconceptions about Islam and Ramadan in the legal field.
